Macbeth - Act One: Reflection
Macbeth is one of the greatest plays written by man. From the intriguing details to the tug on opinions and unanswered questions. In act one of Macbeth Shakespeare gives up some controversy between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth along with a twist of witches and evil.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are obviously married and they are in this curse set by the witches. Or are they? In at the begging of the act the witches tell Macbeth that he will become future king. Well in scene five Lady Macbeth makes her plan know stating, " ...Duncan's entrance into my fortress, where he will die." She then goes and states some very dark witchcraft type of stuff like, " thicken my blood and clog my veins... so that no human compassion can stop my evil plan... come to my female breast and turn my mother's milk into poisonous acid.” This gives the question of if she may be the 4th witch. Now at the begging of the play, Macbeth meets three other witches and his wife is not one of them. The commentary on their relationship is that Lady Macbeth basically wears the pants in the relationship or at least knows how to manipulate Macbeth.
“The agents of evil often tell us part of the truth in order to lead up to our to our destruction. They earn our trust by telling us the truth about little things, but then they betray us when it will damage us the most.” The witches have three very smart mischievous minds. These witches could very well have manipulated Lady Macbeth to turn on her husband by becoming a 4th witch. In the book in scene 5 again it talks about how evil her murderous plan is to take any power for her and her husband. These witches are most definitely agents of evil and the devil resides in Lady Macbeth giving her her thoughts she wouldn't normally make on her own. Like Macbeth himself he knows deep down he should not be murdered but the devil in both him and Lady Macbeth makes him want to and push him to do. It's more the devil in Lady Macbeth that downplays Macbeth's ego saying he's no man and he needs to be “ th’ innocent flower , But the serpent under’t.”
The controversy between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth it's morally internal it's more of an external force acting on their mental status. The moral of the act on is that the Macbeths are cursed and are taken over to make “ foul” decision when he could have done “fair” decisions.
