The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the Great Gatsby with many underlying themes, two of which are hope , compassion and forgiveness. Many people During the jazz age used hope as a way to keeping going. Hope is still alive today in everyday things, along with home.
Hope is presented in the novel in different ways one way is by a green light. The green light represents Gatsby's hope to meet daisy and soon win her back. He sees the green light far away yet knows his relationship is very present. "Involuntary I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing expect a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock" ( Fitzgerald 21). Humans use hope as a way to look forward and have a reason to keep going, like Gatsby, he used the Green Light as a reason to keep pursuing his relationship with daisy. Throughout the novel Gatsby demonstrates that his motivation is the green light. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter- to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther..." (Fitzgerald 180). On the contrary another way to show hope or use hope is the way Daisy uses her hope, instead of using her hope as a reason to keep gong she uses her hope on her daughters future, " I hope she'll be a fool- that's the best thing a girl can be i this world, a beautiful little fool" ( Fitzgerald 17). Daisy doesn't wish her daughter intelligence she wishes her to be a fool, that ways she grows up have a painless simple life.
Compassion and forgiveness all the characters in the Great Gatsby showed a willing to forgive and a stubbornness not to. WIht Gatsby and Daisy for example, Gatsby was willing to forgive Daisy for her marriage with another man, but not her loving him. Daisy is willing to forgive Tom for cheating but unwilling to forgive Gatsby for deceiving her about what kind of person he was.
